introduction

Chung Cheng University's Office of Information Technology provides a wide variety of information, computing, networking, and related support services to the University community. Office of Information Technology supports faculty, researchers, staff, students and departments with free email, timesharing systems, training, consulting, data services, workstation clusters, multimedia classrooms, office and residence hall networking, as well as personal Web pages and on-line information delivery through campus WWW site. Office of Information Technology operates the University's campus networks, connecting departmental and campus networks to each other and the Internet.

  • Mission
  •         Office of Information Technology is the central organization supporting academic and administrative use of technology at CCU. It is a service organization whose mission is to improve the quality of teaching and research at the University through the strategic use of computing and communications technologies. And it also facilities the administrative operations efficiently and effectively.

  •
  •         The goals of Office of Information Technology are to provide core computing, networking, and information services for the academic community in the most cost-effective way, and to introduce innovative technological resources and techniques to support teaching, research and administrative operation at the University. Core services are designed to meet most of the common needs of most users, to provide certain high-end technologies with economies of scale, and to support individuals', departments', and disciplines' specialized needs with advice and appropriate infrastructure.
  • Facilities and Services
  •         Office of Information Technology operates a large cluster of central computer systems for instruction, academic research, and information and network services, as well as clusters of public workstations, and printers. The cluster of SUN Sparc Systems provides instructional and research computing, electronic mail, network access and Web and other information services for faculty, students and staff. The central systems include an IBM SP2 to support research users and several IBM RS6000's, too.

  •
  •         Several clusters of microcomputers and terminals support instructional and student computing needs. These facilities include Intel and SUN workstations providing Windows, Linux, and UNIX environments; color x-terminals; projection facilities and high-volume Postscript printing. Five networked, multimedia classrooms are also available to instructors.
  • Support Services
  •          Office of Information Technology offers a variety of ways to obtain help. Users may have all the HelpDesk for immediate assistance or referral, or send electronic mail to a 'consultant' ID where questions are usually answered within 24 hours. The Center also offers personal assistance to students, faculty, or staff with questions or problems with Office of Information Technology services or personal computing consultants are available in the labs to answer questions about both UNIX and microcomputer systems. The staff also creates handouts, reference cards, manuals, and technical notes documenting Office of Information Technology facilities and services. Office of Information Technology offers a variety of training services, including a curriculum of short courses and in-class presentations that focus on UNIX, basic network literacy and Web publishing. Support for social science computing and data for instruction and research is provided through the Electronic Data Service.
  • Networking
  •          Office of Information Technology designs and operates the University' campus network, using Gigabit Ethernet protocols to connect departmental and campus networks to each other and to the Internet and Internet2. The network extends into every office and students' residence hall room on campus, allowing convenient network connections in any location with RJ-45 port. Wireless Ethernet is being planned. A pool of 56k high-speed modems provides off-campus access to the network.
  • Information Services
  •          With the revolution in information technology, the electronic medium is as important as the printed work as a means of disseminating information. Office of Information Technology operates and supports the use of the University's WWW service, now a primary means of distributing information to students, faculty and staff. Partial University documents are now published on our web site simultaneously with their appearance in print; and the electronic official document systems is now being developed. Management features allow information providers to control access to individual items. Office of Information Technology offers both online space and advice to faculty, staff, departments and offices wishing to publish on the Web.
